One Of The Biggest Lessons That I Have Ever Learned With Marketing My Business
by Steven Downward in An Entrepreneurs StoriesToday I wanted to share with you one of the biggest lessons that I have ever had around marketing and business. It is the concept of TESTING.
See, when I started in the home based business industry many years ago, the people that were my upline, my coaches, never really taught me anything about real marketing or business skills. What I was told, was to just go out and show my little presentation that they gave me to everybody that I could and through this I would build my business.
Now I don’t know about you but I was pretty gullible back then so I believed them. Heck, they were making more money then I was in the business so I thought I should listen to them. But I soon realized that if I was to just do that, I would not be building a 6 or 7 figure a year business. All it did was just waste a lot of people’s time, mine and my prospects.
It wasn’t until a few years later (and a couple of different companies) that I started to hear about real marketing principles and real marketing strategies. With all this nontraditional MLM marketing that I was beginning to learn, the word testing began to be used for business. Immediately I started listening to what this guy was saying because he sounded like he really knew what he was talking about.
He was talking about how to market an MLM business using real marketing principles just like how big businesses market. Now I don’t know about you but that seemed to make sense to me. The so called marketing strategy of “go talk to all of your friends and family members” just never sat well to me. I figured that if I wanted to build a big business, I should build it like big businesses do, through trying a marketing tactic, monitoring the results, make a correction, and trying again with using the results from the last test to help steer your direction.
I have to admit that it was something that I understood right away but it was not something that I applied in my business right away. It took me a few months to even get my business to a point where testing was something that was feasible. See there is no point in trying to test something where you get crappy data. Crappy data just means that you can’t make an educated decision from the information that you are given from your monitoring.
So once I got my business into a position where I could actually test things and get good data back, I started to see the results coming in. The biggest thing was with some ad’s that I had been running with Google Adwords. When I first started to do some testing with one of my ad campaigns, I was getting about a 2% conversion for my ad. At the time, I thought that this was an excellent conversion. After spending a few months at monitoring and testing different ad’s, my results have dramatically increased. For last month (Sept 2009) my ad for this campaign converted at a 8.10% CTR (click through rate). That is more than 4 times what I originally thought was good.
(I put together a pic so that you can see what I am talking about.
Unfortunately, I do not have a pic with the before conversions but I took one for you from Sept 2009.)
Now I am encouraging you to take some time and set up some systems for your business so that you too can start testing your results. Through these tests, you will learn so much about your business and you will start to generate more recruits, revenue, and profits.
Till we talk again

PS: I would love to hear any of your stories about how you have done some testing on your business which made a dramatic difference for you. They are always great to read because I love reading how other people have triumphed.
PSS: If you want to learn from the guy that taught me about how to test and get the results that I have been getting the head over to www.TheRealOnlineTraining.com and see for your self what he teaches.
