I’m sure that you recognize that everyone of us is different than everyone else.  I know that I saw that very early on in life.  But we don’t always think about what that really means when it comes to building a business either online or offline, at least, I didn’t realize it anyways.

So what am I getting at here?

Well, it’s simply the fact that when you get into business you need to learn about you, about who you are, what you’re good at, where your strengths really lie.  Then leverage those strengths in the best possible way you can for your business.

Let me explain this using my life as an example.

When I first got started in business I heard the concept looking at other people that were successful and then do what they did.  So that’s exactly what I did.  I saw all these successful people and I started to emulate what I saw them do.  The problem that I ran into was that none of the stuff I saw them do seemed to work too well for me.

So instead of sitting back and looking within to find out why things were not working I just went out and found someone else to learn from.  And what happened was that I spent years learning from this person than that person about what they were doing to become successful.

This really sucked and was really frustrating.  Looking back on this I kind of feel that I was a bit insane.  Instead of trying to do something different I was just changed the wall that I was beating my head against.  Ouch.

All this changed a while back when I started to look at myself and I really started to learn what I was NATURALLY GOOD AT.  What are my natural skill and abilities that I can leverage to produce more without it being a struggle or a push?

(I’m going to talk about The Law of the Lid here a bit so if you haven’t seen this post, I highly recommend that you watch the video.)

I learned that where my strengths lie are not in the public eye.  But that’s where I was spending the majority of my time because that’s what my mentors told me to do.  Be out in front of the pack and make a name for yourself.  This is an area where my starting point was so low on the scale that I could never really become a master at it.  On my best days today, I would only say I’m a 5 or a 6 out of ten where other people whose naturally good at this stuff would start at a 5 or a 6.

What I was not told to do was to find a way that generates a cashflow and then expand upon it.  But that’s actually where I really do well.  I start at a 5 or a 6 here.  I’ve always been good with money and with managing where it goes to get the best return out of it.

Have you ever played the game “Cashflow” by Robert KiyosakiI?  If you haven’t I highly recommend that you find someone that has it and play it a half dozen times or so.  Anyways, this game is designed to teach someone how to get out of the “Rat Race” and to become financially free.  (Really cool way to play with money without having to put hard cash on the table.)

I’ve literally played this game over a thousand times (no joke) and looking at what I do in the game compared to what I use to do in real life, there’s no wonder that I struggled, I was not only fighting the world of business but I was fighting myself the whole time.  It was like trying to paddle up a raging river thinking that my goal was up the river instead of just going with the flow of it (going with what I’m naturally good at) and just letting the river take me with ease.

I hope that this helps you in someway with your own business journey and I encourage you to take the time to look with in.  Look at who you are and what you’re naturally good at.  What do you like to do the most in your business?   What get’s you the most excited when talking about your business?  To find these things, ask someone that you’re close with what they think.  Talk to your parents or long time friends.  All these people can really help you get a good in-site into yourself and your passions.

And when you discover what these talents are, soak them up.  Allow yourself to see what these skill can really do for you and if they dramatically change your outlook towards business and even life like it did for me, let it.  You’ll be grateful that you did.

Getting that first cheque from your online business is a big thing, I know.  I remember when I made my first bit of money off of the internet.  I was stocked.  Lately, I’ve had a few people ask me how I did it and I realized that I’ve never shared this.  So I thought that I would.

Before I get into the whole story, I’m going to be frank with you.  I’m going to be honest and tell you straight up how I did it.  It’s not going to be roses and butterflies here, just the facts.

So how did I get that first cheque?

Not all that easily to tell you the truth.  When I first decided to build a business using the internet, I really had no idea what that really meant.  At the time, I was involved in a network marketing company and I thought I could grow it faster online than offline.  What I didn’t realize was that I was jumping into a completely different ball game.

When I first came online, I had a singular focus, getting leads for my business, period, end of story.  That was my fist mistake. Even though I was aware of creating multiple streams of online income, I didn’t really get it and I thought that I wouldn’t need to get it.

Basically I wasted several months trying to get leads for my particular business instead of looking at earning an income from the computer.  When I got this concept and actually took action on it, that’s when I made my first cheque.

Now what did I actually do?

I did a couple of things.  The first thing that I did was I found an affiliate program for a company that I really liked and respected.  It was for a site software program that assist people in the home base business industry build sales funnels quickly and easily.  At the time, that was how I was making all of my sales funnels and I figured that if I liked it and was using it, other people would want to use it too.

I got my affiliate account from them all set up and got my affiliate page to promote.  I then went out and bought a domain name that I could forward to my affiliate link.  (Basically meaning I give people the domain name that I bought and it would send people to my new affiliate page where the sale would be made)

After this, I started to market this domain name.  To do that, I did several different things.

1) I made about a half of a dozen different videos all of them pointing back to the domain name.

2) I wrote about a dozen different articles that again pointed back to the domain name.

3) I was active in a forum and I changed my signature link to my new domain name.

Even though I was doing all of this, I some how didn’t make a sale for about a month or two after putting this all together.  For me, it was not something that was quick and painless.  I spent many hours creating these different content pieces and then many more hours getting some traffic to these pieces of content that pointed back to my affiliate link.  But that’s what I did.

Now it was not a big sale, just a whopping $18 but it was income and I did it.  I also knew that if it worked once, it could work a thousand times more. So after this, I just kept plugging away at it, building my business.  Getting a lot of things wrong but also, a lot of things right.

From following what I learned by making this first bit of cash, I’ve now gone on to make thousands of dollars and I now have a consistent income from the internet.  Now I don’t say this to brag or to boast, but to inspire you to take action and grow your own business.  I know that it’s possible because when I started, I knew nothing about nothing in the way of the internet.

So use what I’ve done and do it for yourself.

OK, so I’m guessing that you want to know how to start an online business?  So that is what we’re going to get into here; you understanding how to start an online business for yourself so that you can have the freedoms to do all of those things that you really want to do.  Now let’s get into it.

The first thing that you need to know and understand when starting an online business is that businesses, I mean real businesses, are not some get rich quick or make a fast buck.  They’re about building an asset that will pay you for a lifetime if you want them to.  It’s going to take some time and effort on your part to get it up and running but as an entrepreneur you will understand that and will want to keep moving forward with it.

Now that that’s all said and done, let’s get into sharing with you how to start an online business.

In reality, there are only three things that you will need to do and have in-order to make some cash off of the internet.  These three things are: a product, a sales site, and your marketing.  I know that this sounds almost too basic but it’s the truth.  This is all that you will need to start a business online.

So I wanted to get into each of these so that you can really understand what you will need to do to get your business off the ground and running. 

How To Start An Online Business: Part 1 – The Product

Every business on the planet has some sort of a product.  This is the item or service that the business sells in-order to generate revenue (cash).  With an online business, you can pretty much choose to sell anything that you want; right from a widget to cars to informational products to a professional service of some type.

Now here’s the thing with the internet though, people come to the internet to learn things and to gather information, so what do you think sells the best?  You guessed it, information products.  But that doesn’t mean that your product has to be an information product.  You might have already developed a product of your own and you now want to sell this via the internet.  This we will be getting into more with the second part so stay tuned.

If you don’t already have a product, do not fear, there are thousands of people that will pay you to sell their “pre-packaged” products.  Have you ever heard of a thing called “Affiliate Marketing“?  Affiliate marketing is a way that you can make money by promoting other peoples products.  The great thing about doing affiliate marketing is that you don’t have to deal with any customer issues, collection of money, sales site, or anything else that is really involved in making the sale.  All you need to do is get people to a site that they provide for you and then collect the checks.  (I have a video walking through this entire process at the bottom of this post)

So, get a product.  This is the first and probably the most important piece in understanding how to start an online business.  So make one yourself, buy the rights to one, or become an affiliate of someone else’s, just get some sort of a product.

How To Start An Online Business: Part 2 – The Sales Site

This is one of those things that is rather obvious.  You will need to have a site that does the selling for you.  See this is one of the most beautiful things about the internet.  You have a web page that does the selling for you.  A page that does not take time off or go on holidays; it runs 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Basically, you have a sales person that never stops working for you.  This is really cool.

When people come online wanting to start an online business, they feel that their sales page needs to be some flashy looking site with all of their products on it so that the visitor, your potential customer, can choose what they want to buy.  This really does not work on the internet all that well.  People tend to have ADHD to the extreme when they come surfing online.  If you give them too many options they will get confused and then just click away to some other page.

What works really well online is a page that looks more like an article than an actual sales page.  It’s pretty plain and boring and there really is nowhere for the person to go but either back or buy, and we want the latter of the two.    You can see how my sales process works at www.OnlineBusinessPuzzle.com

One more thing I needed to mention.  Remember when I talked about affiliate marketing and how it’s a bit easier?  What happens with affiliate marketing is the person that created the product and gave you the ability to market the product takes care of this whole step.  They build the whole thing for you and then they just give you a link to the sales page for you to promote.  (Again I will walk you through this in the video below, just keep reading down)

How To Start An Online Business: Part 3 – The Marketing

When learning how to start an online business, you will need to spend a good chunk of the time learning how to do internet marketing correctly.  Something like 98% of the people on the internet really have no idea as to how to effectively market their business online.  Because of this, they are literally loosing out on thousands and thousands of dollars of lost revenue.  So don’t make this mistake.

With the internet, there really is a lot of different ways that you could market your business.  But the big ones are: SEO (Search Engine Optimization), PPC (Pay Per Click), Social Media, Videos, and Articles.  I talk about each of these different types of marketing in different posts here on my blog so I’m not going to get into specifics for each form.

But I do want to add a few of different things about marketing online as a whole.

1. Focus on type of marketing to start off with.  Don’t try to be the jack of all trades and do all the different types at the same time.  What you will find is that you will not get anywhere and you will just get frustrated and eventually quit.

2. Marketing online can cost money or it can be free.  If you choose to do paid marketing, make sure that you set yourself a budget on how much you’re willing to spend in any given month.  I have seen a lot of people bet the farm in their first month and found themselves to have no return and no more cash.

3. Act quickly.  The faster that you start your marketing and the more you get out there, the quicker it will be till you start turning a profit.  So get things on the road ASAP.

How To Start An Online Business: Tying It All Together

Now I know that this has been long (way longer than the majority of my other posts) but I feel I just need to add a couple more thing so that you can better understand how to start an online business.

Firstly, you don’t need to do all of this on your own.  You can hire out experts to do some or all of this for you.  A great place to go is Elance.com or WarriorForum.com.  You can find experts in just about anything you might need from these 2 locations.

Secondly, remember, “Rome Was Not Built In A Day” and neither will your business.  Give your business the time that it needs to grow and to develop.  Once you have it rocking and rolling, there is very little that can stop it.

Today I put together a training on something that I have been doing successfully for over a year, Getting Free Traffic. 

So check out this video to see one of the ways that I have been getting a ton of free traffic and what you need to do to get it too for your business.

Like I was showing you in the video, Article Marketing is by far one of the easiest ways to generate free traffic.  Not only are there a lot of people bouncing around the different article directories, but the search engines like Google and Bing love articles.  They love them so much because as a general rule, articles have a lot of value.  If they don’t offer value, the directories generally will not allow them to be published.

And here is that list of article directories that I suggest that you start out with.  Remember, you’re not limited to any number of directories so you can submit an article to just one of them or to all of them.  The choice is yours.

All of these are great places to start and even some of these, you can earn some extra income from them just for writing and article that does well.  (And that is what we want anyways)

Now take this training and get at it.  See if you can write 5 new articles before the week is out and submit them to these directories.  If you do your Keyword Research well you might even be able to make some cash this week from the marketing.

I felt the need to create this post around something that I found to be a big game changer for me and my business.  Now this is not some specific strategy or technique that I did to get my business to run smoother or to operate better.  It’s something that a friend and mentor said to me that really hit home and once I started applying it, things really started to move.

What I’m talking about is how to get traffic back to your site. 

Now I know that you have heard that there are many different ways to get traffic and this is totally true.  There are literally hundreds of different ways that a business can get people to come back to their site and see what is going on.  But this one thing that was said to me that was a real game changer was around the word focus and mastery.

What do I mean by this?  Well it’s really simple. 

You need to master a specific method of traffic generation.  I’m guessing that you have heard this before because I know that I’ve heard this from dozens of different places and it makes total sense.  Let me explain this in a real simple example.

If you have ever been to a pond where there are a bunch of Lilly Pads on it, you will know that when they start to grow there becomes a lot of leaves on the waters surface.  Now just think if you through a rock out into the middle of the group of lilly pads thinking that you will be able to hit one if you just through the rock in their direction.  But what happens, normally, you miss all of them. 

Why is that?  It’s because you didn’t focus on hitting a specific one so you missed all of them.  This is how it works with marketing you business. 

Because there are so many different ways to get your site out there, people try to do all of them and what happens is nothing works.  There ends up being very little traffic coming back to the site and you don’t make any money.

So what this big game change for me was when I made the decision to take one style of marketing and one profit center and really focus my energies on mastering this method and area.  This has given me bunch more success in business and has produced me a lot more profits.

I choose to pick a specific marketing method, a specific niche, and a specific product.  I stopped trying to chase all the different profet centers with all these different marketing styles.  Instead, I focused on one marketing method and getting results with this one method. 

I kept changing and tweeking things until I had marketing and a sales funnel that generated me traffic, leads, and sales.  Now that I have done this once, it is way easier to either expand on this method or try something new.  I know for myself, I have choosen to expand on my current methods.  I feel that this is the best way for me to grow my business the fastest.  But, you need to decide what is best for you and your business.

But first, pick a marketing style, a sales style, and a specific lead product and then go to work.  Get your system running smoothly and turning you in a profit.  Once you commit yourself to this practice of business and you apply it, you will start to see results.

This is a very interesting and important topic.  What does your business depend on?  A lot of people think that a new business depends upon the owner or the creator.  Well, it does at the very begining but for a business to achieve real long term success, the business needs to depend upon systems. 

I put together a short video to explain this more.

I hope that you see the importance of having systems for your business.  Now, if you want to have a small business, you know, just a couple of hundred dollars every month, you might not need to do anything.  But if you want to really create success, you will need to have systems. 

If you have a bookkeeper, you will need a system to manage that person plus how you get all the financial stuff to them.  That is a system. 

If you have someone that does some of your marketing, you will need to generate a system to get the content to them that you want them to market.  You will also need to have a system to communicate with that person or company.

If you hire an employee, you will need many systems around them in the way of communicating with them and having them stay productive.  If they don’t work at the same location as you do, how will you manage the time that they work? 

These are all things that you will need to create systems for if you want real long term business success.

With so many people getting into business that have never really owned or ran a business before, I felt the need to share a big about setting up a business.  See, this is an area that can be critical to achieving success with owning a business. 

Now I know that this is not something that is talked about all that much but it is an area that if done well from the beginning, it can really increase the speed for your success.  Let me put it this way.  Normally, when someone starts a business they’re the ones doing most, if not all of the work.  And that’s fine if you want to be a self employed person and being a slave to your business. 

But if you don’t want to be a slave to your business then you need to set up the business so that you can get other people to do the work for you. 

Now I’m not talking about outsourcing your business to other companies here.  That is a good idea but you still need to manage the contractors to make sure that they’re doing a good job.  What I’m talking about is setting up the structure of your business so that you will not always have to be the one watch everything. 

See there are areas that every business needs to have and realistically, there should be a manager taking care of that department.  Then you only need to deal with that one person, the manager, for you to find out everything you need to know about what is happening with that area of your business. 

There are a couple of key sections that you should plan to have a manager looking after for you.  Things like Marketing/Sales and Finance.  These two sections should have someone looking after them and making sure that they are moving forward.

Now what about when you are first starting or you are very small, should you still have these sections? 

Absolutely YES.  It’s just that you will be the one managing that position in the beginning.  But you should still plan and think about what you’re going to need. 

Let’s put it this way.  If you go and write out your business structure, the areas or sections of your business, it isn’t hard to figure out what each of the posistions need to be doing and what their responsibilities are.  This way, as your business gets bigger, you’ve already set out what you will need in the way of an employee and what their responsibilities will be. 

So just to give you an example.  Most people don’t really like to deal with the finances but they know that they need too.  So you might want to structure this department with a bookkeeper/administrator and a CFO (Chief Financial Officer).  Like I said, you might be one or both of these in the beginning but by know this and what each of these people will be responsible for, you will know what you need and where your business will be heading.  (Plus, this is big for the Law of Attraction)

I suggest that you spend some time and look at this for your business.  This is one of those things that you hear about where you will be working ON your business and not IN your business.  This is also one of those things that will move your business forward faster because you will know where you need to be going. 

I would love to finish this post off with a bit of a story that I heard from Steven Covey, I think.

In the forest there is a group of people that want to put a road from one end to the other.  There are all of these different workers working away at choping down the trees with their axes, and others sharpening the axes, and others cutting all the branches off of the trees that have fallen, and even more people dragging all of the branches and logs away. 

Then there are managers that are out there making sure that the workers are staying fresh and are on the right track.  They are putting on courses and trainings that teach the workers how to be more effective.  These managers are making sure that the workers are following the plan that has been laid put for them, and so forth.

Then there is the leader.  This person climbs the highest tree in the whole forest and surveys the land to make sure that they’re going in the right direction.  Then this person yells down to the managers… “WRONG FOREST!!!” 

I really like that story because it shows how there needs to be people at every level of the business and how each of them has their own responsibilities.  Now with you being the CEO or the Owner, YOU need to be that leader and guide your people in the right direction so that your business moves forward successfully.

But to do this, you need to make sure that you have your business structure set up and planed out.  The sooner you do this, the sooner you will be able to effectively get other people to work for you to produce your business more money. 

Again, I suggest that you look at this for your business.  You will be happy that you did.

Being the head, the CEO, of a business, you end up having a lot of different things come across your desk.  I don’t know if you have noticed this or not but I know that I sure have.  All these different things from marketing to systems to finance to sales and everything in between. 

But what I felt the urge to talk about today is not any one of these things in specific, but rather where you need to be fitting into all of these.

You see, there’s one major thing that every CEO needs to be doing.  We need to determine what we like to do and what we’re good at and then get other people, outsource, the rest. 

What do I mean when I say what we like to and what we’re good at?  It’s really not all that hard when you think about it.  Take some time and ask yourself these 2 questions.

“What is it that I can do that I will accept no one else doing but me?”

“What are the things that I can do to bring in the most revenue for the business?”

You see, the first question is getting you to priorities what you need to do that no one else can.  Now this will vary for every business and every person.  Some people are fine with hiring a CFO to make sure their finances are being taken care of properly where other would feel that they need to do this themselves. 

But really put some though on it because these tasks that you will not let anyone else do needs to be one of your priorities and things that you need to become very good at. 

The second question there really focuses on your skills, what are you good at.  If you’re really good at and like being on camera but you suck at building a site, you might want to get a system or a person to help you with the site and you focus on being on the camera for marketing and sales. 

I will give you an example from my own life and business.  I suck at design work.  You know, making something look great like a website or a power-point presentation.  When ever I try something around this arena, it just ends up looking bad and not professional. 

So, I’ve learned to outsource it.  I get someone else to do it that is good at it.  Through doing this, I fee up my time, I’m don’t get frustrated with it, and I have an end product that looks really good and that I’m actually happy with.

This is what you need to do in your business.  Figure Out What You’re Really Good At And Then Outsource The Rest. And if you’re worried about the money and the cost, trust me, you will get a better return when you have a proffessional do something that you’re not good at.

Take this to heart and look at your business.  See what you can focus on to grow your business the fastest.

So what really gets you going when building your business?  Many people think that they know and that they are focused on it but, do they really? 

I know for a fact that many people think that they know their “WHY” but, they don’t.  They know the “why” that they have been told that they should have.  They never really looked with in themselves to really find out their “why”. 

Let me explain more in this video that I put together…

As I said in the video, many people say that their why is “to help other people”.  But to me, that is very small and what everyone says.  I believe that it may be to serve others but it goes deeper than to just help people.  Think bigger on this.  I’m sure that it is something that really goes deep.

I know for me, it’s the game of business that really gets me excited.  I get all fired up and high energy when I’m playing the game of business.  The more in-depth it gets, the better.  The contributing to people lives comes as a by product of what I love to do.  It’s like it’s a report card of how well my business is going.  If I’m not contributing to a lot of peoples live, then my business isn’t doing well.  Plain and simple. 

But what about you?  What really get’s you excited and fired up?  I know that it is something that’s really big and that’s worth your time.  So think about it.  I mean really put some big thought on this.  Find what drives your energy up quickly, easily, and powerfully.  If you start to think about it and you automatically smile with the excitement, you know that you are on the right track.

I hope that you are having a great day today because I know that I am.  But that’s not the reason for this. 

I have something that I wanted to share that can really help your business.  Now I don’t know if you realize this or not but you need to understand the value that you are bring to your market.  Now VALUE, what am I meaning by that?

Well I am talking about how you, your business, helps the people in your market, so the people that you want to become customers, how do you change their lives.  Because this is a very important question that you need to be asking yourself and you need to know the answer like you know the back of your hand.

You need to know this because this is why your prospects and leads decide to become a customer and buy from you. 

It’s the value that you offer.  but it goes beyond just you knowing what value you are giving to your market.  It’s them knowing what value you offer them. 

Nobody On This Planet Buys Anything Unless They Feel That There Is Value In What They Purchase. 

So you need to make sure that you’re conveying to your prospects what your business can do for them.  They need to know how you will be able to help them enrich their lives.  This is what get’s people to buy.

Now take what you heard in that video and apply it to your business.  That’s the key here for me.  That’s what I love to see.  I love watching businesses grow.  It gets me so fired up seeing how people build their business and how that business impacts so many people.  But you need to take this and get it on the road.  The quicker the better.
