Please, Don’t Fall Into This Trap With Your Home Based Business…
by Steven Downward in An Entrepreneurs StoriesI thought that I would share something with you today about my personal experience in building my business. It’s about a trap that I fell into that took me quite a few years to even realize that I was in. And I am sure that I am not the only person that has fallen victim to this trap because I feel it was pretty easy to get stuck.
I put part of it in this video here. Take a look.
So I am sure that you know what I mean by there are probably a lot of people fell victim to this. For me, I fell into this because I was told that I needed to read the right book and be around the right people. The teachers and mentors always talked about developing your mindset. Now I know that it is very important and I am not saying that your mindset is not important because it is. What I am saying is that we get told to develop our mind but they miss the part about telling us to develop our skills.
To me, there is a major difference between the two. If I spend an hour and I read a book like Robert Kiyosaki’s “Rich Dad Poor Dad”, I spent that hour developing my mindset. But I could also spend that same hour and learn about PPC Marketing, which is learning about a skill for my business.
We need to do both and that is where I got stuck. I was taught that if I just work on my mindset, the business would get built. There was never any talk about learning how to generate new leads or convert them into recruits or sales.
Make sure that you are putting energy into both of these because I know for me, when I started to learn the skills of lead generation and conversion, my business completely changed. It went from me thinking that I was building a business to there was a business.
So make sure that you do not fall into this trap of where to spend your time. In reality, you need to have both.
And if you could do me the favour of passing this along, I would really appreciate it. I know that there are people out there that are struggling the way that I did and I would really love to assist them on their journey.

Thanks Steven I think this video might have been made for me too. A while back I have sent you a question in this matter of developing the mindset (book).
As off topic: I’m starting my own but I’m not in a rush either or want to wait too long. What I would like to do first is map everything else so I’m not setting myself up for failure.
Back:
True mindset theory is not enough you need to have the actual skill that you are going to build to use in the first place. If time not used correctly will end up waste of time and longer to start.

How easy it is to get caught up on mindset because that topic is everywhere these days. Mastering both skills and mindset is what will bring you long term success. Thank you for sharing, Steven!

Thanks for sharing this advice Steve. The mental aspect should be focused on first, but not at the expense of the practical aspect. You become more adept by practicing your craft.
That being said ensure that you make personal development the priority. Revisit books, listen to CDs, and practice self-improvement techniques throughout the day, every day. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of doing what everybody else does when going about a normal workday. It’s in our nature to follow the herd. To break from the herd you must thinki differently from the herd, and that is where mental science comes into play.

Hey Steven,
Man this video is spot on. SKILLS are much more important than anything else you can develop in your business. Hey are you in Hawaii by the way? That looks kind of like where I used to live on the north shore of Oahu.

Glad to hear that you agree. It was a big lesson for me and one that has made such a difference to me.
And no I am not in Hawaii. Right now I am living in the south-west Costa Rica. Nice place. From what I can tell the temp is about the same.

Excellent advice Steven! It really does require both skills and mindset… I compare it to the yin and yang of business:)

No Kidding Rose. I never thought of it like the Yin and the Yang of business but you are so right.
Thanks for that.
